Music - The Core Knowledge Sequence requires all K-8 students participate in a general music class every year with performances through 5th grade. We incorporate Core Knowledge topics, Colorado State Standards along with the National Music standards throughout the year. All students learn to sing, move, play, listen and create using common terms including the music elements, composers, multicultural music, and well-known major works; and how music affects us as people. Recorders are played in grades 3-5, with band instruction starting in 4th grade, an extra singing group, Day Break Singers, meets outside of the school day, along with the Timber Wolf Band and Choir for grades 6-8. As a culminating activity, we also offer grades 5-8 to experience a musical production every 2-3 years, where acting, singing, and dancing and technology is combined to produce a lasting experience for all
Band - The Timberwolf Band program offers a variety of opportunities for students to get involved in instrumental music. Middle school students may choose to be members of the Timberwolf Band, which rehearses at the end of every school day and gives six or more performances during the year. The band is comprised of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, horns, trombones, and percussion, as well as a smattering of specialty instruments, such as the oboe, bassoon, euphonium, and tuba. Band members may earn “karate belts” by mastering scale exercises, and points toward their Medallion ribbons through their involvement throughout the program. Performances are mandatory, individual playing is frequently assessed, and consistent daily practice is both encouraged and graded. For students who wish to begin an instrument in 6th grade or later, special arrangements may be made to “catch up” in learning the fundamentals of their instruments.
In addition to the Timberwolf Band, Twin Peaks also offers 5th Grade Band (rehearses on a 3-day rotating schedule), Jazz Band for middle school students on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, and 5th Grade Enrichment Band on Wednesdays after school. Jazz Band members have the opportunity to learn how to improvise solos and perform at jazz festivals outside of school. 4th graders may also choose to take Beginning Band, offered 4th Quarter only.Music
